Case Study 01 · Building a personalized AI product from 0→1

Builder DNA: what if an assessment could tell you what to build next?

Not another personality quiz. A decision-support product — an assessment that turns self-knowledge into a concrete next move, and turns the result itself into the product's own acquisition channel.

01 · The problem

From “What should I build?” to “What am I built to build?”

Entrepreneurs are surrounded by generic advice about finding an idea, validating a market, and shipping an MVP. But generic advice assumes everyone builds the same way.

I saw an opportunity to start somewhere different: understand the person first.

Builder DNA was designed to surface a founder’s underlying working and building patterns — then turn that insight into practical decisions about business, career, product, and growth. The goal wasn’t another personality quiz. It was a decision-support product.

02 · The product opportunity

The assessment wasn’t the product. The recommendation was.

That single reframe changed the design strategy — from a one-shot label to a loop that creates both user value and new-user acquisition in the same surface.

03 · Product vision

An AI-powered personal operating layer for how people build.

Help people understand how they naturally build — and use that knowledge to make better decisions. Five principles governed every product call:

Personal before generic

Recommendations should reflect the individual, not a persona bucket.

Action over labels

The result should lead to a decision, not just a description of self.

Useful immediately

The user should leave with something they can act on today.

Shareable by design

The result should naturally create conversation and acquisition.

AI where intelligence matters

AI personalizes the experience — it isn’t just a chat interface bolted on.

05 · The MVP

The first version had to prove three things.

Would people complete the assessment? Would the result feel personally meaningful? Would people want to share it?

That drove the scope — deliberately.

Every possible coaching, community, and marketplace feature. I deliberately constrained scope to validate the core value proposition before building anything adjacent to it.

06 · The experience

Eight archetypes, one shareable result.

The live archetype set — each with its own personalized recommendation logic and shareable result card with edge-rendered social metadata:

The Visionary
Thinks in decades, sees patterns others miss.
The Shipper
Gets things out the door while others debate.
The Architect
Builds systems that are elegant and durable.
The Hustler
Instinct for what people want, and the drive to deliver it.
The Polymath
Learns fast, connects ideas across domains.
The Craftsman
Cares about the details everyone else skips.
The Operator
Makes systems, process, and growth actually run.
The Maverick
Breaks the rules that need breaking.
07 · The product decision
Product decision
I didn’t treat virality as a marketing feature. I treated sharing as part of the product experience — the user’s result became the acquisition surface.

Builder DNA evolved from an assessment concept into a production acquisition and personalization surface within the broader Waymaker product ecosystem — assessment → result → share → signup, live end to end.

09 · What I learned
The strongest AI products don’t necessarily expose the AI. They use intelligence to make the underlying experience more useful.
