Both are general-purpose AI assistants, both have a free tier and a ~$20/month plan, and both can write code, draft a business plan, or talk through a decision with you. So "which one should I use" isn't really a features question — it's a "which one is actually built for what I'm doing" question.
What each one is built around
ChatGPT is the biggest AI assistant by user count, and it shows in the ecosystem: a marketplace of Custom GPTs other people have built, native voice mode, image generation built in, "Operator"-style agent features that can fill forms and place orders in a browser, and deep integration across OpenAI's own apps. If you want an assistant that already has a pre-built tool for almost anything, and one that feels like a consumer product first, that's the design center.
Claude is built with a different emphasis: careful reasoning on hard or ambiguous problems, and — increasingly — being the thing other builders build on top of. Claude Code (a terminal-native coding agent), Claude Cowork (shared team workspaces), Projects (persistent context for a specific piece of work), and the underlying API/Agent SDK that products like Waymaker are built on all come from the same lineage. If you want an assistant that pushes back on a weak plan instead of just agreeing with it, that's the more common report from people who use both.
Current pricing, so you're not guessing
ChatGPT: Free tier, Plus at $20/month, Pro at $200/month for the highest-usage tier — plus Team and Enterprise plans for organizations.
Claude: Free tier, Pro at $17–20/month (cheaper billed annually), Max starting at $100/month for 5x–20x more usage, and Team/Enterprise plans starting at $20/seat/month. Claude Code and Claude Cowork are included starting at the Pro tier, not gated to a separate top-tier plan.
Neither is meaningfully cheaper than the other at the entry tier — the real cost difference shows up in usage limits and which features are locked behind which plan, so check current numbers before deciding on price alone.
The real difference, if you're building something
If the task is "build and ship software," Claude has the more mature story — Claude Code isn't a bolted-on feature, it's a first-class product with its own extensibility (MCP, Skills, hooks, subagents — see Claude Agent SDK vs Claude API). ChatGPT can write and explain code well, but it isn't built around a terminal-native agentic coding workflow the same way.
If the task is "get something done in the world" — book something, fill out a form, buy something online — ChatGPT's Operator-style agent features have had a head start there, because that's been a deliberate product focus.
If the task is "think through a hard decision with something that won't just tell me what I want to hear," that's the most common reason people cite for preferring Claude for real planning and strategy work, not just drafting.
Where they're converging
Both now have an "artifact"-style building surface inside the chat itself — a canvas where you can iterate on a document, a webpage, or a piece of code without it just scrolling past in the conversation. Both have added agentic, multi-step task features on top of what started as pure chat. The gap between "a chatbot" and "an agent that does things" is closing from both directions, same pattern as the IDE-vs-terminal convergence in coding tools.
The honest answer
If you're building software, especially with any real engineering discipline, Claude's ecosystem (Claude Code, the Agent SDK, MCP) is the more purpose-built path — it's also literally what Waymaker itself runs on. If you want the widest pre-built ecosystem, native voice, or browser-automation agent features today, ChatGPT has more of that shipped already. Plenty of builders keep both open — one for the actual build, one for research and the things its ecosystem already covers.
Where to go next
- Claude Agent SDK vs Claude API — the layer you'd build on if code, not chat, is the actual job.
- Claude Code vs Cursor — the next question once you've picked Claude for building.
- Claude.ai vs Claude Code vs Claude API — which one when? — the broader decision tree once you're set on Claude specifically.
